She, Botkin, Stobs and Saltza set a new world record in the 4×100-meter freestyle of 4:08.9. Spillane also swam the freestyle leg for the gold medal-winning United States. team in the preliminary heats of the women"s 4×100-meter medley relay, but she was ineligible for a medal under the 1960 international swimming rules because she did not swim in the event final. Spillane attended the University of Michigan.
