In the early 1990s Joel Tobeck was the breakfast show weatherman on Auckland radio station 95bfm. He followed this up with film roles in Sure To Rise, Peach and Topless Women Talk About Their Lives. Tobeck had recurring roles in the cult television fantasy series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys as Strife and Xena: Warrior Princess as Deimos, which exposed him to American audiences and led to appearances at fan conventions in the United States.
