Jay was raised in the Towamencin Township, Pennsylvania, area about a mile outside of Lansdale borough. Caufield was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later signed with the New York Rangers in 1985 and was assigned to the Toledo Goaldiggers of the IHL. He played 13 games with the Rangers in the 1986-1987 season, accumulating 45 penalty minutes.
The Rangers traded Caufield prior to the 1987-1988 season, where he played 65 games for the Kalamazoo Wings.
He averaged nearly four penalty minutes a game, and in 194 games with Pittsburgh he scored three goals. He was demoted to the IHL for 1993-1994 and retired at the end of the season.
