Late in life, he taught two undergraduate seminars at University of Southern California, entitled "British Empire From the Mid-19th Century" and "The Era of the First World War".
Prior to University of Southern California, he was dean and professor at Tulane University, New Orleans. Visiting professor at Yale University, and assistant professor at Louisiana State University (at Baton Rouge). Hubbard earned his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in history from the University of Texas - Austin and honorary degrees from Hebrew Union College, Westminster College, College of the Ozarks and University of Southern California Law School.
Hubbard was a pilot in the United States Navy during World World War II, winning four Air Medals.
While an undergraduate at the University of Texas, he became a brother of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
In 1970, University of Southern California became a member of the Association of American Universities.
