He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1937. Millay served in the United States. Navy during World World War II, and was stationed at the Naval Air Station, Trinidad, where, among other duties, he was a bowling instructor. In 1938, Millay rolled a 300 in bowling, scored an ace in golf, and pitched a no-hit, no-run game for a professional baseball team
