Payne was a right-handed batsman who bowled left-arm roundarm medium pace. Payne made his first-class debut for Sussex against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord"s in 1861. He took figures of 4/29 in the Marylebone Cricket Club"s first-innings, but wasn"t required to bowl in their second-innings, with the Marylebone Cricket Club winning by 85 runs.
He made a second first-class appearance for Sussex in that season against Kent at the Royal Brunswick Ground, Hove.
He took his only career five wicket haul in Kent"s first-innings, with figures of 8/73. He later made a single first-class appearance for Kent against Yorkshire at Swatter"s Carr, Middlesbrough.
Payne took one wicket in the match, which ended in a 4 wicket victory for Yorkshire. He died at Greenwich, Kent, on 12 April 1880.
