A native of Hoover, Alabama, Humphrey attended Hoover High School, where he was a three-time All-State selection.
Humphrey is considered one of the best cornerbacks of his class. During his junior and senior season, Hoover went a combined 30–0, winning consecutive AHSAA 6A State Championships in 2012 and 2013. Regarded as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Humphrey was ranked as the Number.

Humphrey committed to attend the University of Alabama on January 29, 2014. In high school, Humphrey also competed at a world-class level in track.
He lost to Jamaican Jaheel Hyde, who established a new championship record and came.01 seconds shy of tying the World Youth Best held by Wilhem Belocian. Due to an injury, he had to skip the 400 metres hurdles final, an event in which he held the World Youth Leading for 2013.
Humphrey was named to the United States of America Today All-American Track and Field Team.
Humphrey intended to compete in football and track for the Crimson Tide. After redshirting his initial year in Tuscaloosa, he became a starter at cornerback in 2015.
