Smej was appointed auxiliary archbishop of the Archdiocese of Maribor, as well as titular archbishop of Tzernicus, on April 15, 1983 and ordained bishop on May 23, 1983. Smej held the position of auxiliary bishop of the Maribor diocese until his retirement on June 18, 2009.
