Career
He established himself as a left-winger during the 1960s in the most successful team in the history of Peñarol of Uruguay winning 11 major titles and remains one of their most iconic players. Also known as "Negro el once", Joya started his playing career in the youth team of Alianza Lima. In 1958, Joya scored 17 goals in 18 matches of the Peruvian league, making him the league"s top goalscorer.
In 1960 he joined River Plate of Argentina.
He helped reach second place at the Argentina championship. Joya played 9 games for the Peru national team in which he scored 3.
He played in two Copa América in 1957 and 1959. Joya was part of the Peru national team which demolished England 4-1 in Lima, a game in which he scored the fourth goal.
