Julie apprenticed with the portrait painter and photographer Leopold Hartmann, then traveled to Paris and Italy.
In 1905 Julie established herself as a photographer in Copenhagen and opened a studio with Fransiska Gad in 1907 that shortly won great recognition. In 1910 Julie was appointed photographer to the Royal Court, and during her career credited teaching books on photography and wrote articles on the trade.
Very active in the feminist movement, Laurberg was among the co-founders of the Women's Building Society. She also served on the board of the Photographers Trade School of the Association of Danish Photographers and was the school's treasurer until her death.
