( An insightful and inspiring book for the mindfulness se...)
An insightful and inspiring book for the mindfulness seeker, The Way of Aikido offers a new way of facing life's challenges using the powerful philosophy of Aikido. In the bestselling tradition of classics such as Zen and the Art of Archery and Peace Is Every Step, The Way of Aikido translates the teachings of an intricate Eastern philosophy into life lessons for American readers. Over many decades, George Leonard taught more than 50,000 people a unique form of Aikido, in which life's unanticipated blows become gifts, attacks lead to reconciliation, discord is transformed into harmony, and pain is reborn as vital energy. Learn unique and effective ways to: · cope with sudden setbacks—and turn them into gifts for growth · develop ki, or positive energy, to enhance vitality · use the principle of "blending" to deal with verbal and psychological attacks The Way of Aikido is the culmination of Leonard’s teachings, designed not only for students of the martial arts, but also for all who seek to improve themselves.

(Education and Ecstasy, by George Leonard, was originally ...)
Education and Ecstasy, by George Leonard, was originally written as a call for reform in America's school systems. Published in the Sixties, and then revised in the Eighties, this book reveals the deep-rooted structural problems in American schools-problems which still plague us. Leonard proposes that long school days and tedious homework are not ways to encourage learning; that teachers are overworked and underpaid. He proposes ways to integrate new methods of teaching that are still valuable and applicable today.

(The author of The Future of the Body and the author of Ma...)
The author of The Future of the Body and the author of Mastery team up to present a proven method for reaching the next stage of human development. Can people with the time-and energy-consuming concerns of job and family find a way to transform their lives through a regular, long-term program of body/mind/spirit development? Is it possible, through conscious choice, to participate in the next step of human evolution? Two of the most distinguished theorists and teachers of human transformation believe the answer to these questions is yes. In this inspiring and practical book, George Leonard and Michael Murphy offer a comprehensive program of Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) based on a two-year experimental class that grew out of their lifework. Drawing upon some seventy years of combined experience in the study of human potential, along with the significant findings of their recent experiment, they present step-by-step instructions for joining body, mind, heart, and soul in an evolutionary adventure that has powerful personal and social implications. Their message will be especially refreshing to those who have become disillusioned by promises of immediate gratification, instant learning, and effortless enlightenment. This book shows the way to profound and lasting transformation through long-term practice. It celebrates the day-by-day joys of the path while opening fresh vistas to human futures.

(We are born with the God-given right to move efficiently,...)
We are born with the God-given right to move efficiently, gracefully, and joyfully. We lose this right only through society's mind-body split, faulty modes of physical education, and overemphasis on "winning." George Leonard's simple and radical notion is that within each of us, regardless of age, sex, or physical condition, there exists an ultimate athlete waiting to be born. With a poet's passion, fifth-degree aikido black belt Leonard evokes the transcendent moment in sport—the catch that defies gravity and chance, the play that makes time stand still—as emblematic of the Greater Game of embodiment itself, of life and death, a Game we all can play to depth and breadth of body and soul. The Ultimate Athlete helped create the participatory sports boom of the 1970s and 1980s. This revised edition is addressed to a new generation of ultimate athletes.
