He studied law at the University of Fribourg.
He holds dual nationality, Swiss and Italian. He has been the general secretary of Union of European Football Associations since 2009 and was elected president of Fédération internationale de football association during the 2016 Fédération internationale de football association Extraordinary Congress on 26 February 2016. He is of Italian origin from Calabria and Lombardy.
He is fluent in Italian, French and German and also knows English, Spanish, and Arabic.

Gianni Infantino started working with Union of European Football Associations in August 2000 and was appointed as the Director of Union of European Football Associations"s Legal Affairs and Club Licensing Division in January 2004.
He became Deputy General Secretary of Union of European Football Associations in 2007 and Secretary General of Union of European Football Associations in October 2009. During his time there, Union of European Football Associations introduced Financial Fair Play and improved commercial support to smaller national associations.
He oversaw the expansion of Union of European Football Associations Euro 2016 to 24 teams and played a role in the conception of the Union of European Football Associations Nations League and the Union of European Football Associations Euro 2020 that will take place in 13 European nations.
In 2015, the Greek government decided to introduce a new sports law in response to the recent scandal and acts of violence and corruption mainly in Greek football. Gianni Infantino, as Union of European Football Associations"s general secretary, led the negotiations with the Greek government and supported the Hellenic Football Federation"s warning to Greece that it faces suspension from international football for government interference. On 26 October 2015, he received the backing of the Union of European Football Associations Executive Committee to stand for the position of president in the 2016 Fédération internationale de football association Extraordinary Congress.
On the same day, he confirmed his candidacy and submitted the required declarations of support.
On 26 February 2016, he was elected Fédération internationale de football association President for a period of 3 years. The first match that Infantino watched when made president was Swansea vs Norwich where the home side ran out the victors.
Infantino was a member of Fédération internationale de football association"s Reform Committee.
