He played over 1,000 National Basketball Association games over a 15-year career. A 6"9" forward from Eastern Michigan University, Long was selected with the 33rd pick of the 1988 National Basketball Association Draft by the Miami Heat. Long played six seasons for the Heat, earning a reputation for his aggressive defense and strong rebounding.
After the first two games of the 1994-1995 season, Long was traded to the Atlanta Hawks along with Steve Smith for Kevin Willis.
Long played two separate stints with the Hawks (1994-1996) and (1998-1999). He would also play for the Detroit Pistons, Vancouver and Memphis Grizzlies, and Boston Celtics, and he ended his National Basketball Association career in 2003 with 9,518 total points and 6,154 total rebounds.
He and Mills were teammates on the Detroit Pistons during the 1996-1997 season. Having served as the broadcast analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder since 2008, Long resigned from the position in July 2014.
In October 2014 Long joined Fox Sports Detroit as a Detroit Pistons analyst and sideline reporter.
