Engelmann was the daughter of Eduard Engelmann Junior., three-time gold medallist at the European Figure Skating Championships, and therefore was exposed to the sport at an early age.

She began skating as a small child. They became Olympic champions in 1924. Engelmann did not compete in the European championships, as her father did, because the pair event was not established until 1930.
