He was admitted at Trinity Hall Cambridge on 6 January 1707. His inheritance resulted in considerable litigation as the third baronet"s will was contested by Sir Henry Penrice. Oxenden stood unsuccessfully for parliament at Sandwich, Kent in April 1713.
He voted as a Whig but was often absent in the latter days when his health was deteriorating.
Oxenden died aged twenty-nine and requested burial at the family vault at Wingham. Oxenden married Anne Holloway, daughter of John Holloway a barrister on 27 July 1712.

At the general election of 25 August 1713 he was elected Member of Parliament (Member of Parliament) for Sandwich and held the seat until his death in 1720.
