Norway, Maine, Nov. 3, 1830, and died at Carson, Nevada, May 28, 1879. His father was a physician of high standing, and an enthusiastic and learned naturalist. Henry received a good academic education in Portland, where his father long practiced his profession. In 1847, the family re moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and there he studied medicine for a year, under his father, at the same time associating himself with some artists, and acquiring some knowledge of painting in oils. A mong his artist acquaintances there, was Thomas Buchanan Read, to whom he often referred in after life in terms of high regard. In 1850, he started for California, not arriving there until he had, in company with a fellow-voyager, kept a hotel at Nicaragua, during a winter, and suffered for two months at Panama, from a prostrating tropical fever. A writer of the Sagebrush School, he was the editor and publisher of Carson City, Nevada"s Nevada Appeal. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War as assistant adjutant general, with the rank of captain, and was wounded in action. In 1868, he was elected State Printer and served a two-year term.
In 1876, he was elected to the Nevada Assembly, serving as Speaker in 1877.
The following year, he ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor of Nevada. He was also an artist, painting still life and landscapes.
His one book,, consists of literary essays. Henry J. Mighels Junior. took over as editor of the Appeal in 1898.
Philip"s ex-wife, Ella Sterling Mighels, was the "First Literary Historian of California".
