Background
He was the son of John Abel Smith (1802–1871), Member of Parliament (Member of Parliament) for Chichester and Midhurst and Anne Jervoise, the daughter of Sir Samuel Clarke Jervoise. His grandfather was John Smith who preceded his father as Member of Parliament for Midhurst.
