(“I have been a man of five women” confesses the historian...)
“I have been a man of five women” confesses the historian Justo Adriano Alemán to his young confidant, the narrator of this novel. His words open the door to a private world full of passion and secrecy.

(This account of the turbulent years that followed the Mex...)
This account of the turbulent years that followed the Mexican government's violent repression of the student uprising in 1968 is told through the experiences of a fictional historian-turned-journalist-turned-historian again. His notes and journals, together with testimonials and other sources, form the basis for this social and political history, biography, and novel. Carlos Fuentes has praised the book's blinding clarity, and he adds: "All Mexicans have lived at least part of this war…These wounded lives are, or could be, our own."
