From 1971 to 1990 Ignacy Nowak twelve times participated in the Polish Chess Championship"s finals. Since 1999 he is not involved in serious chess tournaments.

In 1985 in Gdynia he shared the first - third place, and then won additional tournament in Warsaw, a half point ahead of January Adamski. In Polish Team Chess Championship Nowak represented the Poznań chess club and two times (1985, 1988) won the team event. Also twice Nowak won Polish Blitz Championships (1973, 1987).
