He was apprenticed to Jan Mertens on 11 January 1625 and became a master in the Brussels Guild of St. Luke in 1634.
Paintings from his workshop are referred to collectively as "The Sonian Forest Painters". In 1655 he was made chartered tapestry cartoon designer of the city of Brussels. At the time of his death he owned several houses (one of which was in the Sonian forest) and a painting collection, though his lavish lifestyle had left him severely in debt.
He died in Brussels.
He was especially good at painting tree trunks covered in moss and ivy.
