Stier returned to Croatia in 1996 and worked as a diplomat in Washington and Brussels. He was also a foreign policy adviser to Ivo Sanader. He was subsequently elected to the Croatian Parliament in 2011.

Following Croatia"s accession to the European Union in 2013, he was elected as one of the first group of Croatian members of the European Parliament.
