He was in the squad of Ukrainian U-21 team finished second in 1996 Union of European Football Associations European Under-21 Football Championship Qualifying round group 4. He made his senior team debut against Israel, April 27, 1993. Post Retirement.
He won the bronze medal in the Fédération internationale de football association World Youth Championship 1991 with the Soviet Union Under-20 team when only being 17 years old. Upon retiring from football, Mykhaylenko became a commentator for Ukrainian Premier League football matches, debuting on 25 July 2009 in the home match of Dnipro - Metalist Kharkiv, in which Dnipro won 2:0.
