McGauchie began his duties as chairman on 20 July 2004, taking over for Bob Mansfield who vacated the position in April 2004. He resigned from the position on 8 May 2009, after failing to meet expectations of large Telstra shareholders, and since replaced by Catherine B. Livingstone.
