Selden graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York, in 1819. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of his profession in New York City in 1831. Selden was elected as a Jacksonian to the 23rd United States Congress and served from March 4, 1833, to July 1, 1834, when he resigned.
He was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New New York
He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1831.
