He was the second son of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent and Alice Fitzalan.

1400 – ca. He was a younger brother of Thomas Holland, 1st Duke of Surrey. He had an affair with Constance of York and fathered illegitimately Eleanor de Holland born in c. 1406; Eleanor was later married to James Tuchet, 5th Baron Audley.
He was killed at the battle of Île-de-Bréhat on 15 September 1408.
He is buried on the island of Lavrec, in the Brehat archipelago. His remains might have been the one discovered there, showing an important warrior, died after a serious wound at the chest.
