Born in New York City, Magee studied music at Westminster Choir College and Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University Bloomington where her teacher was the American soprano Margaret Harshaw.

She is perhaps best known for her roles in the operas of Richard Strauss. In 1995, Magee made her operatic debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, singing the role of Fiordiligi in Mozart"s Così fan tutte. Her international debut came in 1996 at the Berlin State Opera, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim.
In 1998, she sang the role of Elsa in a recording of Wagner"s Lohengrin opposite Peter Seiffert and Daniel Barenboim conducting.
The next year, she recorded Wagner"s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as Eva with the same conductor. In 2005, she recorded the role of Ellen Orford in Benjamin Britten"s Peter Grimes with Franz Welser-Möst conducting.
In 2008, she recorded Dvořák"s Rusalka with the same conductor. Her 2009 performance in the title role of Puccini"s Tosca at the Zurich Opera opposite Jonas Kaufmann and Thomas Hampson was released on Digital Video Disc in 2011.
In 2016, she appeared at the Paris Opéra as Die Gräfinance in "Capriccio".
