Short was selected 9th overall by the National Basketball Association"s New York Knicks in the 1975 National Basketball Association Draft. In the previous year he was selected by the American Basketball Association"s San Antonio Spurs in the fifth round of the 1974 American Bar Association Draft. He played for the United States national team in the 1974 International Basketball Federation World Championship, winning the bronze medal.
He played for the Seattle SuperSonics and New York Knicks (1975-1976) in the National Basketball Association for 34 games.
Eugene was the older brother of Purvis Short, another onetime National Basketball Association player.
