The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Zymalkowski was a student of Karl Wilhelm Rosenmund at the University of Kiel. On 27 November 1944 Zymalkowski married Barbara Zimmermann.
The marriage produced two daughters, Katharina born 1946 and Brigitte born 1948.
