Born in Nevada, Missouri, he attended University of Kansas from 1920 to 1921, but transferred to Westminster College, where he played from 1921 to 1923.

Standing 6 foot 1 inches tall, DeBernardi was one of the best centers of his era, but played all five positions. He was named All-Conference in both 1922 and 1923. Following his impressive collegiate career, DeBernardi became an outstanding Amateur Athletic Union player.
Between 1920 and 1929, when he played with Kansas City Athletic Club (1920-1922), Hillyard Shine Alls (1923-1927) and Cook"s Painter Boys (1928-1929), he participated in 10 national Amateur Athletic Union tournaments and was named to the Amateur Athletic Union All-American team eight times.
In 1938 the Associated Press selected DeBernardi as the center on its All-Time All America college basketball team In 1961, DeBernardi was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.
He died in 1970 at the age of 71.
