He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Southern California, where he contributed with his blocking at the tight end position. He is mostly known for catching a last second touchdown pass from quarterback John Mazur, that gave his team a 28-24 victory over second ranked Oklahoma.
Prior to this play, he only had one reception in his college career.
Cornwell was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 3rd round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He didn"t have much experience as a receiver, so he struggled executing the offense.
He was mainly used for blocking purposes and was the backup to Doug Cosbie. He was released before the start of the 1986 season.
