Leah (Kellner) is a translator who is traveling international cities in search of romance and closure with her estranged boyfriend Jeff. She eventually settles in Beijing, China, where she meets and develops a fixation on Master Sun Zhan (Geng Le), who teaches here a Chinese game called weiqi. When her relationship with Master Sun Zhan takes a turn for the worse, Leah decides to focus on getting revenge on Jeff. Richard (Wu) is a shiftless Chinese-American whose family sends him to Beijing with his grandfather's ashes. Eventually Leah and Richard's paths cross.

World-renowned American film director Rob Tyler (played by Donald Sutherland) is shooting a remake of The Last Emperor in the Forbidden City, Beijing. The director's assistant Lucy, a Chinese American (Rosamund Kwan), hires a Beijing cameraman named YoYo (Ge You) to shoot a "making of" documentary. The director discovers he has ailing health and is booted by the film's producer from the shoot. After witnessing a Chinese funeral for the elderly, Tyler tells YoYo he wants to have a similar "comedy funeral". Soon afterwards the American director falls into a coma. YoYo is officially allowed to plan Tyler's funeral and he enlists the help of a businessman friend to attract as many sponsors as the funeral process would permit.

Fu Biao was born on September 27, 1963 in Beijing, China.
After graduating from high school, he entered a film academy in Beijing to learn acting.
As a film actor, he acted for the first time in the Shanghai Triad (摇呀摇,摇到外婆桥). From 1997 he acted in several New Year films directed by Feng Xiaogang and became a recognizable actor.
Fu Biao died from liver cancer after having his liver transplanted twice.

1998Fu Biao married actress Zhang Qiufang (张秋芳) in 1989. In 2006, Zhang published a memoir Yin Ji (印记; "Mark") about her marriage with Fu. The book also included some of Fu's writing after his cancer diagnosis, as well as commemorative essays by family members and some of their celebrity friends.
Fu Biao's son Fu Zi'en (傅子恩), born in 1991, graduated from Beijing Film Academy's Directing Institute.
