He joined Penoyre & Prasad in 1992 before starting his own firm in 1998. In 2000, Building Design gave Hoskins its Young Architect of the Year Award. He was named United Kingdom Architect of the Year in 2006 and Scottish Architect of the Year three years later.
In 2010, he was given the Order of the British Empire for services to architecture.
Hoskins was married and had two children. He had a heart attack on 3 January while watching a fencing competition, and died six days later at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Hermitage Park in Helensburgh was renamed to honour Hoskins shortly after his death. National Museum of Scotland redesign
