She was elected to the city council of Rome in October 1997. In April 1999 she became Lazio regional coordinator of the Party"s youth movement. In May 2001, she was also elected town councilor of Rome.
Then she was appointed head of the adult group of Forza Italia and served in the post until 2006.
She was appointed minister of health to the cabinet led by prime minister Enrico Letta on 28 April 2013. Lorenzin succeeded Renato Balduzzi in the post.
Lorenzin continued to serve as the minister of health in the cabinet formed by Matteo Renzi in February 2014.
In November 2013, she left the People of Freedom party and joined the New Centre-Right led by Angelino Alfano.
Lorenzin was a member of the People of Freedom party which she joined in 1996. She has been a member of the Italian parliament since 2008.
