In 1978, she finished fourth in the 200 metres final at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, before winning gold in the 4 × 100 m relay along with Kathy Smallwood, Sharon Colyear and Sonia Lannaman.
She competed for Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984, winning bronze medals in the 4 x 100 metres relay in 1980 and 1984. In 1976, she competed at the Montreal Olympics, reaching the quarter finals of the 200 metres. In the 100 metres, she ran her lifetime best of 11.22 seconds.
At the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, she was one of three British woman who reached the 200 m final, finishing sixth in a lifetime best of 22.72 secondss.
Kathy Smallwood was fifth and Sonia Lannaman eighth. The quartet ran a United Kingdom record of 42.43 secs, which stood until 2014.
She also competed in the 100 metres. The fourth squad member was Simmone Jacobs. she usually ran the third leg and became a specialist in this position.
In domestic competition, at the AAAs National Championships and United Kingdom Championships, she had eight second-place finishes.
At the AAAs she was second in 1978 (100m), 1979, 1982 and 1984 (200m). At the UKs, she was second in 1978 (100m & 200m), 1979 (100m) and 1982 (100m). As of 2014, Callender"s 200 metres best, still ranks her 10th on the United Kingdom all-time list.
In the 100 metres she ranks 18th.
