She graduated in 2002 from Colegio Ponceño in Puerto Rico, but attended Preparatoria Luzac in Torreón as a freshman and sophomore.
She played middle blocker at the University of Southern California from 2002–2005 and was a three time All-American. Candelas played in the 2002 Pan-American Cup helping her team to reach the 4th place and individually winning the Best Blocker award. 2002: 21st place in the World Championship in Germany
2002: Bronze Medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador
2006: 21st place in the World Championship in Japan
