Collinder was born in Sundsvall, Sweden.
His name is sometimes spelled "Bjorn Collinder" in English-language contexts. Foreign much of his life he was a professor of Finno-Ugric languages at University in Sweden. He was one of the world"s leading experts in the Uralic languages, noted for his Comparative Grammar of the Uralic Languages (1960), which is still often cited today.
He died in Vienna, Austria.
