He died in Paris 18 November 1665. A military engineer, field marshal, traveler, and theorist of fortification, whose example Vauban built on. A descendant of a Neapolitan noble family which moved to France in 1552, he served in the armies of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. He died without issue.
