He served in the United States. Peace Corps in Ghana from 1969-1971, where he taught secondary school physics and mathematics. From 1979 to 1982 he was in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study. He currently teaches in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University.
His research involves the study of the interstellar medium, especially interstellar dust, photodissociation regions, and shock waves.
In 2007, he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences for his excellent work in the field of Astrophysics. He is one the authors (together with Piotr J Flatau) of the public domain DDSCAT code based on the discrete dipole approximation which has application to light scattering by non-spherical particles and nanophotonics.
