(This book distinguishes Milton's academic importance from...)
This book distinguishes Milton's academic importance from his real status, and addresses readers with broad literary interests, who may be ready to think again about a poet whom Dryden saw as superior to both Homer and Virgil. The work is therefore a contribution to the ongoing histories of Milton's reputation in particular, and literary taste in general.

("Genius": Gift or Curse? This is an in depth study of Ext...)
"Genius": Gift or Curse? This is an in depth study of Extraordinary Cognitive Ability, ECA, focusing on its biological origins and the subsequent clinical manifestations importantly influenced by key environmental modifiers, crucial to the direction of the accelerated cognition. A historical review of the various theories of origin of Genius is the lead off discussion. A detailed basic science review of cognition includes a theory of genetic origin, Emergenesis, which is likely the core determinant of ECA, in addition to physiological, anatomical and chemical data now believed to be responsible for heightened thinking in man. The study points out that ECA and Genius are not equivalent terms, with the former occurring from a basic neuro-biological origin and the latter reflective of the later clinical outcome with behavioral criteria fulfilling the modern definition of Genius. Several biographies are included that demonstrate important commonality features between these gifted individuals with a variety of outcomes from multiple genres, including one with a destructive focus. Individual burdens that are common with this cognitive advantage are clear with these biographical reviews. The book stresses the potential importance of early recognition of this unique human facility in order to positively influence the outcome away from destructive directions. In addition, early supportive therapy's may be instituted which could prevent potential significant psychiatric illnesses, which may well occur with this advantaged cognitive ability without a clear focus or direction. However, it is clear that this facility of ECA has been a tremendous gift for society in general. Over the ages this phenomenon has and continues to be responsible for significant contributions of both our understanding of the world around us; as well as providing key directions that have so greatly enhanced our standard of living that we all enjoy on a daily basis.

(Jim Symington has a rare addiction for Washington: he lis...)
Jim Symington has a rare addiction for Washington: he listens. Right-hand man for Bobby Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Ambassador Jock Whitney, he was present-often a participant-as national and world events unfolded. Witnessing history from the New Deal to President Obama's Cuban initiative, Symington is a willing recorder of eavesdrops, "ranging in propriety from blasphemy to prayer." Heard and Overheard is presented in a prefatory sampler and three parts involving "politicians, statesmen, and real people." To read it is to relive pivotal moments of modern history, to meet the giants (and villains) of our time, and to savor a narrative that is epic in scope, gem-like in faceted brilliance, and laugh-out-loud hilarious. "Jimmy Symington...is one of the best story-tellers in the world, a distinction he shares with his fellow Missourian, Mr. Mark Twain... [He] is a WASP Forrest Gump... You name it, he was there. The man has had more lives than a cat; more phases than Madonna." -from the foreword by Christopher Buckley.

( A legendary book collector, a connoisseur of fine art, ...)
A legendary book collector, a connoisseur of fine art, a horticulturist, and a philanthropist, Henry Edwards Huntington is perhaps best known as the founder of the world-renowned Huntington Library, Art Gallery, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. James Thorpe's comprehensive biography of Huntington tells the richly human story of the man who became America's greatest book collector and was a leading figure in the development of southern California. Henry Edwards Huntington was born in New York State in 1850. He began working at the age of 17, eventually moved to California, and in later years was hailed for his vision in developing the street railway system that created the structure of the Los Angeles area. Always a lover of books, Huntington acquired many spectacular volumes—among them the complete Gutenberg Bible on vellum and the library of the Earl of Bridgewater. He also built a splendid art collection and established a grand botanical garden on the grounds of the buildings that would house his art and books. Then, in an act of philanthropy seldom equaled, he gave these great treasures to the public. The intimate side of Huntington's life appears in these pages, too. Thorpe has culled a vast trove of private letters, diaries, and other documents that reveal Huntington's exceptional personal qualities. The author's well-rounded biography of this unassuming yet gifted American is also richly evocative of the times in which Henry Edwards Huntington lived.

The Gutenberg Bible, which appeared about 1455, represents the invention of printing in the Western world. The Huntington Library holds one of three vellum copies of the Gutenberg Bible in the United States. Color reproductions of several pages and initial letters from the Bible accompany this text, which details the early history of printing and the way the Gutenberg Bible was produced. The author also discusses Henry Huntington's purchase of the Bible in 1911 for the then-unimaginable sum of $50,000.
