Carl Spitzweg was born on February 5, 1808, in Munich, Upper Bavaria, Germany. He was the second of three sons of Simon Spitzweg and his wife Franziska. His father was a wealthy merchant. He had two brothers.
Carl Spitzweg was trained by his father as a pharmacist. He attained his qualification from the University of Munich (now Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich), but while recovering from an illness, he also took up painting.
After receiving a University education as a pharmacist, Carl Spitzweg worked first as an assistant pharmacist, and then as a pharmacist. At the same time, he studies painting on the canvases of Dutch masters of the XVII century, exhibited in the Munich Alte Pinakothek. In the 30s and 40s of the XIX century, Carl worked as a draftsman and illustrator for satirical magazines, for example for "Flying leaves" ("Fliegende Blätter").
Spitzweg's paintings created during this period were ironic in the image of the city harmony, the life of a small Burger. These works pointed to the great talent of the observer features of human nature, had a clear composition and display of the game of light and shadow, as in the Dutch genre artists of the XVII century.
In the late 1940s, Spitzweg went abroad, including to Prague, Paris and London, where he discovered the landscape paintings of John Constable, as well as the work of Eugene Delacroix and also the artists of the Barbizon school. Since then, landscape paintings began to play a big role in the artist's work. He died at the age of 77, in his own bed from a heart attack.
