This volume is the first in a series of four which treat various aspects of the labor movement in Maine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The history of organized labor in Maine has been largely ignored by the State's historians. This volume represents an effort to correct this deficiency and to add to a more complete understanding of the forces, events, and personalities that have shaped Maine's history.

He attended the University of New Hampshire, earning a Bachelor of Surgery in Business Administration.
He spent his childhood and adolescence in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Prior to his career in education, he owned a shoe store and shoe repair business. He later earned a M. Editor and a Master of Arts and Ph.
Doctorate. in History from the University of Maine, Orono.
Doctor Scontras taught at the University of Maine for 36 years, holding positions in the Modern Society, History, and Political Science Departments, and in the Honors Program. He retired in 1997, but continues serve as a Research Associate at the University of Maine Bureau of Labor Education.
Maine Labor History Mural
In 1997, the Maine Department of Labor consulted with Doctor Scontras as the agency worked to commission a mural highlighting Maine"s labor history. He worked closely with Judy Taylor, the artist selected for project, to identify the scenes that were captured on the eleven panel mural.
Taylor honored his contribution to the work by using his image in a mural panel that depicts apprenticeship.
He is shown teaching an apprentice how to hand sew shoes.
