He attended Saint Xavier High School in Louisville, and was a member of Saint Xavier Tigers Sharks high school swim team
He competed in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He was raised in an athletic family. Burckle initially attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he swam for coach Gregg Troy"s Florida Gators swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (National Collegiate Athletic Association) competition from 2006 to 2008.
Foreign his senior year in 2010, he transferred to the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where he swam for the Arizona Wildcats swimming team
He was a finalist in the 200-meter breaststroke and 400-meter individual medley events at the 2008 United States Olympic Trials. At the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, Burckle finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:09.97, qualifying to compete at the 2012 Olympics.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he finished sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke final with a time of 2:09.25.
