Perak was part of the Federated Malay States. He was the eldest son of Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Ibni Almarhum Raja Bendahara Alang Iskandar Teja. He was appointed Raja Di Hilir in 1898 and later in 1907, became Raja Bendahara.
In 1916, upon the death of his father, Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I, he was appointed as Raja Di-Hilir.
Raja Abdul Jalil ascended the Perak throne in 1916 following the death of his father Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Ibni Almarhum Raja Bendahara Alang Iskandar Teja. He died on 26 October 1918 and was given the post-humous title of Marhum Radziallah.
He was succeeded by his half-brother - Sultan Iskandar Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Idris Murshidul Azzam Shah I Rahmatullah. The Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Bridge which crosses the Perak River at Kuala Kangsar is named in his honour.
