He grew up in Hickman, Nebraska, where he attended Norris School District 160 and swam for Beatrice High School.

In 2006, he switched allegiance to the United States. He was initially trained by Robin Lowe at Country Kids Swim Team in Bennett, Nebraska. He was the University of Wisconsin–Madison school record holder in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley.
In 2010 Mania was also part of his team"s national championship 4 x 100 LCM Freestyle Relay, giving him his third United States. national title.
Currently he is a coach and swimmer for Schroeder Young Men’s Christian Association Swim Team in Brown Deer, Wisconsin and coached by Dave Anderson.
