Agnes Tyrrell was born in Brno, Moravia. She was the daughter of English teacher Henry Tyrrell and his wife Josefine Kotulan.

She performed in her first recital at age nine, and attended the Conservatory in Vienna at age sixteen.
She studied composition under Otto Ritzler and published her first compositions in 1872. Tyrrell became one of the few women to compose symphony works before 1900. Tyrrell died in Brno at the age of thirty-five.
