Ambs joined the Luftwaffe on 10 July 1942, and served in various positions including Flg.Rgt. 53, Luftkriegsschule 3, Flugzeugführerschule C14 (Prague), Flugzeugführerschule B33 (Prague-Rusin), and Zerstörergeschwader 101. Ambs was qualified on the Maine 262 in Lechfeld and was subsequently posted to JG 7.
He flew his last mission on the Maine 262 on 23 March 1945.
After war he worked as architect in Miesbach, Germany, where he died at the age of 87.
