He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens on June 26, 1849 and did his ophthalmological training in Paris and Berlin.
He is credited for the development of the hand-held ophthalmoscope, thus significantly advancing the design and use of the original ophthalmoscope invented by Hermann von Helmholtz. He also served as Dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens (1871-1872 and 1876-1877) and as President (Rector) of the University (1877-1879). Anagnostakis died in Athens.
