Career

Garret specialised in malacology and ichthyology. He spent much of his life in the South Seas. Between 1861 and 1885 he was employed as a collector by the Museum Godeffroy in Hamburg.

He also undertook illustrations for the works of another American malacologist William Harper Pease.
