Her father, Robert Corcoran, a published author, was a leading figure in the ALP split of 1955, giving evidence to the Federal Executive in favour of federal leader H.V. Evatt. She was an accountant and business manager for a local private school before entering politics. Ann Corcoran was elected in a by-election necessitated by the suicide of the previous Member for Isaacs, Greg Wilton.
She lost her endorsement as ALP candidate for Isaacs in March 2006 to Mark Dreyfus Queen's Counsel. She retired at the 2007 election.
She has acted as Student Ombudsman at Monash University since November 2007 (appointed by the University Council in early 2009).
