He is the brother of Knut Kvalheim. He also competed without reaching the final at the 1968 Summer Olympics as well as the European Championships in 1966 and 1971. In Norway, he represented the sports club IK Tjalve.

800 metres - 1:48.7 minimum (1967).
1500 metres - 3:38.5 minimum (1968) - fourth on the Norwegian all-time list, only behind Lars Martin Kaupang, Vebjørn Rodal and Knut Kvalheim. 3000 metres - 7:44.8 minimum (1974) - third on the Norwegian all-time list, only behind Marius Bakken and Knut Kvalheim.
5000 metres - 13:26.4 minimum (1974) - seventh on the Norwegian all-time list. 10,000 metres - 28:47.0 minimum (1974).
When studying in the United States of America he was a member of Oregon Track Club, and helped the club setting a world record in the 4 x 1 mile relay at Eugene on May 30, 1968 in 16:05,0 minister
